Celebrate art's transformative power with this four-color screen print by General Idea, created on the occasion of the CIRCA 20:21 commission VIDEOVIRUS.
Founded in the late 1960s by AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal, General Idea challenged societal norms through mediums like theatrical performances, magazines, and television shows, blending humour with incisive critique.
"Great AIDS" is a historic example of the collective's activism surrounding the AIDS epidemic. Inspired by Robert Indiana's LOVE motif, General Idea appropriated the image in 1987 to raise awareness about AIDS, a disease shrouded in silence and stigma.
“Our idea was that this was a kind of advertising campaign for a disease that nobody wanted to talk about at the time,” Bronson has recalled. The logo was widely reproduced and plastered on streets, subways, magazines, and lottery tickets, aiming to normalise the discussion around AIDS.
Add a piece of groundbreaking activism to your collection and celebrate the power of art to provoke change and challenge perceptions.
